Grainger focuses on the emerging digital marketplace
Perot Systems subsidiary TimeŘ delivers Grainger a leading-edge digital marketplace application using the OmniMark Content Processing Platform.
With more than 11,000 employees worldwide and revenues topping US$4 billion, Chicago-based W W Grainger Inc is a leading business-to-business distributor of maintenance, repair, and operating supplies and related information for commercial, institutional, and government markets.
To remain competitive as well increase its accessibility to customers, Grainger set out to enhance its existing online storefront. The company Grainger chose for the project was Cambridge, Massachusetts-based TimeŘ, which caters to Fortune 100 customers, providing solutions for the digital marketplace, and is a business unit of Perot Systems Corporation. Perot Systems has been a technical partner of OmniMark's since May 1997.
Grainger purchased several OmniMark licenses for use in the production, development, and testing of an online storefront. Grainger defined system specifications based on business goals and objectives, anticipating requirements users may have in retrieving information about products and in purchasing products. TimeŘ, working closely with Grainger, used these specifications as a guide in developing the system. The OmniMark Content Processing Platform provided the middleware at two points in the production process. On the back end, OmniMark manages the migration of data up to XML and loads it into an Oracle database. On the front end, OmniMark extracts XML data from the Oracle database and formats it to meet the particular requirements of specific users. Delivery formats include HTML for web browsing, print, email, and fax. The environment illustrates the effectiveness of a rigorously engineered content management and publishing process that leverages open information standards, a single-sourcing delivery strategy and the power of OmniMark as a high performance, versatile Content Processing platform.
