Taking Air Force documentation to new heights

At the US Air Force, Stilo's Content Engineering methodology and OmniMark Content Processing Platform are used to cut through administrative layers and reduce paperwork.

Bolling Air Force Base, located south of Washington DC, houses the Air Force Departmental Publishing Office (AFDPO). The purpose of the AFDPO is to provide quality electronic publications and forms to all military and civilian customers, to assist in the creation and maintenance of a thoroughly modern, always-prepared Air Force and to support every aspect of Air Force operations by supplying written guidance and instruction. Within this mandate, the challenges involved in managing Air Force documentation are many. For this reason, the AFDPO wanted to reduce the administrative layers and amount of paper flow associated with managing an enormous number of documents. The goal of the project was to electronically administrate and distribute all Air Force documents and forms from a central site. The solution Stilo offered was cost-effective and customizable to meet the present and future needs of the AFDPO.

The project entailed the deployment of licenses for the OmniMark Content Processing Platform and the Content Engineering services from Stilo needed to design a complete solution. Completed and implemented in under a year, the project involved development of two main components of the AFDPO system: a content 'loader' and a web delivery component. The loader is responsible for parsing SGML and XML data and storing it in a repository, while the web delivery component publishes documents and forms to the web. The solutions also implemented the navigation system and generated the links to all documents contained on AFDPO CD-ROMs. This new solution centralized the administration activities for the AFDPO and greatly reduced the amount of paperwork involved in meeting its mandate, which in turn resulted in significant time and cost savings.
