Why XML?

XML is a powerful medium for content. Moving to an XML-based publishing environment can save time and money and make new publishing paradigms possible, as well as facilitate the submission of content to online publishing archives, such as PubMed Central and Bookshelf.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) JATS & STS XML standards

JATS (Journal Article Tag Suite) – formerly referred to as the NLM Journal Archiving and Interchange Tag Suite – was originally devised by the National Center for Biotechnology Information and US National Library of Medicine with the intent of providing a common format in which publishers and archives could exchange journal content, and has subsequently been adopted by the National Information Standards Organization. The Suite provides a set of XML schema modules that define elements and attributes for describing the textual and graphical content of journal articles as well as some non-article material such as letters, editorials, and book and product reviews.

STS (Standards Tag Suite) provides a common XML format that developers, publishers, and distributors of standards, including national standards bodies, regional and international standards bodies, and standards development organizations can use to publish and exchange full-text content and metadata of standards.

STS is based on the JATS standard.
