Stilo co-sponsors XML@Boeing Conference
11 December 2006
Stilo International, provider of solutions for Product Lifecycle Management,
Document Management and e-Publishing, has recently played a key
role at the XML@Boeing conference in Seattle. The event was hosted
by Boeing's active XML community and was open to all key practitioners
in the region. An impressive range of authorities attended the event
including IBM's Sharon Adler and SUN Microsystems' Jon Bosak. Stilo
co-sponsored the event with North American Vice President, Joe Gollner,
delivering a presentation entitled "Web 2.0 and the
New Collaboration Paradigm".
XML is an incomplete revolution and the rising popularity of the
Web 2.0 phenomenon showcases the ongoing importance of keeping simplicity
in standards and technology at the forefront of the agenda. As happened
with HTML and then again with the initial emergence of XML ten years
ago, the accessibility and simplicity of the standards, and a set
of associated applications, led to massive adoption with the consequence
being, in both cases, exploding complexity. This is being seen again
in Web 2.0.
Finding ways to handle the complexities created by the widespread
use of XML-enabled functionality, as lies at the technical heart
of Web 2.0, will ensure that the positive benefits linked to this
trend, such as the enablement of greatly improved collaboration
venues, can be realised and leveraged.
Joe Gollner, VP Enterprise Solutions Stilo North America, observes:
"As was the case when CDROM publishing first took off in the
early 1990s, or when HTML gave people an 'onramp' for online publishing,
or when XML made inter-enterprise data exchange more practical,
Stilo's OmniMark has been there as the one tool that was capable
of helping people not only to exploit the new opportunities but
also to master the complexities that were created by their own success.
Gollner continues, "When people become excited about new publishing
venues, this is precisely when scalability and robustness matters
most. To give customers the ability to experience new possibilities
and then to abandon them when they really want to do something serious,
as all too many flash-in-the-pan web products do, seems grossly
inappropriate and maybe even cruel. OmniMark is about sustaining
the initial excitement with new publishing capabilities and converting
this excitement into long-term business success.
Gollner concludes, "Many in the audience at XML@Boeing were
in agreement when the real impacts of the success of XML were listed.
Many had asked themselves these questions before. Where did the
promised simplicity go? Why are the users complaining? Why are my
applications so slow? What do I do with all this data?
It is not a failing of XML that it has become so widely used with
the result that many organizations are swimming in XML content.
It does however point to the importance of having a solid, integrated
tool set for handling this content - one that is proven to be robust
and scalable, such as Stilo's OmniMark."
